Multiple Bets: Meaning and Types

Bookmakers across the globe allow bett0rs to pick several selections and combine into one bet. A multiple bet is a bet made up of two or more selections. The selections can be from the same sport or different sports.
In fact, ff you have ever visited a website of a bookmaker and tried to pick on different teams, then the moment you returned to your betting slip you must have found those selections combined in one bet slip.

A multiple bet is quite a straightforward thing once you understand how it works. In fact, you are simply picking all the selections you fancy and putting them together to boost your income should all of them post your predicted result.

A multiple bet can either be a coverage bet or an accumulator. In a coverage bet, the punter tries to use the selections a couple of times in order to create a window of earning more money in case all the selections win or some money in case one of the selections fail to win.

For example, a patent bet is a type of multiple coverage bet in which a punter selects three teams and then uses them to create 3 singles, 3 doubles and one treble. A Trixie is a multiple coverage bet in which the punter picks three teams and uses them to create 3 doubles and one treble.

On the contrary, an accumulator is a multiple bet in which the punter simply picks a number of selections and places a bet without any combinations. For example, a double, a treble, a fourfold, a five-fold and a six-fold are all types of accumulators involving, two, three, four, five and six teams respectively.

Example of multiple bet

If on a weekend the following football teams are playing, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford, Tottenham Hotspurs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, you can decide to build a multiple bet by predicting different results for the teams and then combining your selections into one.

For example, we can say Chelsea to win, Manchester United to draw, Arsenal over 2.5, Watford to draw, Tottenham over 2.5, Barcelona win and Real Madrid win. Once we select our predictions, our betting slip will have all these teams together with respective predictions. If we put the bet in this form, we have placed a multiple bet.

When making multiple bets, we can create doubles, trebles and more. We just need to remember that when we are adding several selections into one betting slip, we are creating a multiple bet.

In a double, there are only two selections. For example, you can pick Barcelona to win and Chelsea to win and combine both in one betting slip, placing the bet with the same stake. A double earns more money on the same stake than two separate singles would do.

For instance, if a Chelsea win is 1.80 and a Barcelona win is 1.50, placing two separate singles will earn you Ksh 330 on a stake of Ksh 200 (100 per single bet). That is only a profit of Ksh 130. But if you placed a double bet, you will earn 1.80 x 1.50 x 200, which is Ksh 540, a profit of 340 on the same stake.

Risk involved in a multiple bet

A multiple bet comes with the exciting benefit that we are increasing out potential returns on a low stake. Nevertheless, there is also a huge risk in accumulator bets. The risk is that when one of the selections in the combined bet fails to get the predicted result, the bet is lost regardless how many of the selections have gone as predicted.

If you are a punter who likes using big stakes, then you may want to avoid the risk posed by multiple bets. However, if you are a punter who wants to make more on small stakes, then you may have to combine several selections into one bet. The more picks you throw into an accumulator, the higher the risk. On the contrary, the more picks you make, the higher the return.

For experienced punters then, an accumulator is used to combine some of the most thoroughly research teams with greater chances of posting favorable results. This yields massive return.

Common types of multiple bets

(a)     Double: A combination of two teams into a single bet.

(b)     Treble: A combination of three teams into a single bet.

(c)     Fourfold: A multibet of four selections.

(d)     Trixie: Three teams selected and used to create three doubles and one treble, giving four bets in total.

(e)     Lucky 15: A multibet consisting of 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, a 4-fold, making a total of 15 bets.

(f)      Lucky 31: Similar to lucky 15 but has 5 legs, resulting in a total of 31 bets.

(g)     Lucky 63: As above but with 6 legs, resulting in a total of 63 bets.

(h)     Yankee: Similar to a Trixie but made of 4 selections resulting in 11 separate bets requiring at least 2 separate selections to win for any return.

(i)      Canadian (Super Yankee): Consists of 5 legs resulting in 26 separate bets and requiring at least 2 selections to win so the bet can give some return.

(j)      Heinz: Made of 6 selections used to create 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 4-folds, 6 5-folds and 1 six-fold accumulator.

(k)     Super-Heinz: Has 7 selections used to create a total of 120 separate bets.

(l)      Goliath: Eight picks used to create a total of 247 bets.

Whether you build your multiple bet either as a coverage bet or as an accumulator, the bet will still have a higher risk and requires that you do your research thoroughly before placing the bet.

A multiple bet reduces your chance of winning because each extra selection can cause the bet to fail. Of course the flip side is that the more teams you add the greater the return, but you should at least do your research well to minimize the risk involved.
