Both Teams to Score (BTTS): Goal-Goal Betting

Goals win football matches, but not all teams have the capacity to score as many goals as others. Some teams rarely create goal-scoring opportunities while others create plenty of chances. Nevertheless, in almost every football match, both teams involved will have some chances to score, making the Both Teams to Score (BTTS) betting market a popular and lucrative market for many punters.

What is BTTS?

In BTTS betting, you are placing your bet on matches where both teams involved will score. In such bets, it does not matter how many goals each team will score, only that each scores at least one goal. BTTS betting is used by many punters in multi-leg accumulators where the teams involved are high-scoring and are likely to post many goals. When you opt for BTTS, the final score of the match means little, you simply want the two teams to find the net and you are done. Besides, it does not matter when or how the teams score; whether in the 1st or 91st minute, a bizarre deflection or a 45-yard screamer, an old-fashioned long-ball routine or an own goal, you just want them to score.

Does BTTS offer value?

In many cases, BTTS market provides good value with the odds ranging from 1.30 to 1.80, even more in some cases. So a bet on BTTS can offer a good profit. In fact, the prices in the BTTS market are usually quite attractive and it only takes a treble or a simple accumulator of 4 or more teams to earn good profit.

Crucial things to remember when placing a BTTS bet

(a)     Do your homework thoroughly

Nothing in football betting is straightforward and football matches can spring surprising results. But if you do your research well then you can post good returns. Good research will help you to bet with logic and common sense, not on emotions or blind faith. Some of the things you must look for during your homework are the number of goals scored and the number of goals conceded, both home and away. Teams that score and concede an average of 1.30 goals and above, home and away are particularly ideal for BTTS betting. Those that score and concede an average of less than 1.00 goals home and away must be avoided. It is also critical to keep your eyes on the average goals scored and conceded by teams in various leagues so you know which leagues can give you a chance in the BTTS market. Most of the information is available online and you only need a little research to make a wise betting decision.

(b)     Check head-to-head statistics

Certain teams have the habit of scoring a bucket load of goals when they meet while others rarely score against each other. So regardless of how many goals a team has been scoring recently, the head-to-head statistics will tell you whether they are likely to keep the trend in their next game. If they have met each other during the same season, then the result may be significant.

(c)     Check the league table

While actual match results do matter so much in BTTS betting, the position of teams in the league table may help highlight the disparity between them. For example, if in the English Premier League you note that Hull City that lies 18th has been scoring so many goals both home and away, would you still fancy them to score against table-topping Chelsea at Stamford Bridge? Well, they may score, but logic and common sense dictates that their chance of scoring is slim as compared to when they meet low-ranked opposition. Therefore, even if the average goals scored and conceded by two teams show that they have been involved in so many goals, check the league table to see if it is still possible for the underdog to score.

(d)     Form matters

While form is temporary, there is plenty of value in backing a team that has recently been scoring goals for fun. So, add teams that have been scoring lots of goals in your BTTS bet and ignore teams that have recently been struggling to score. You should also note that a team with a very solid defense is less likely to concede in their next match.

(e)     Is the team’s top scorer’s playing?

Almost every team has a go-to player when it comes to scoring goals. Chelsea have had Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, among others; Real Madrid have Ronaldo while Barcelona have Messi; Spurs have Harry Kane while Arsenal have Alexis Sanchez. These special players get on the scoresheet so frequently that their presence or absence can determine the outcome of a match. If these players are on form, there is a high chance that their teams will score, but when they are out of form their teams may struggle to score as they have less prolific replacements. Take note of the scorers of different teams so you can use it to your advantage in your BTTS bets.

Betting Exchange: A Different Way to Bet on Football Matches

A betting exchange is an alternative to traditional bookmakers. Typically, traditional bookmaking platforms allow punters to find their selections from a huge pool, inspect the odds, choose their stake and place their bets. But for punters who want to compete against fellow punters or who do not want to pay for the profit margins set by traditional bookmakers, a betting exchange is a viable alternative.

So what is a betting exchange?

A betting exchange is a punter-to-punter, peer-to-peer network, enabling bettors to place bets against fellow bettors. In a betting exchange, players bet against each other, with available odds arbitrarily set by the punters involved.

For example, if two punters are arguing against the team that will win in a match between Arsenal and Manchester United and they are happy to bet on the match, one of the punters say A can pick Arsenal and suggest to the other punter B backing Manchester United to place a bet against his prediction, say worth Ksh 200.

In this exchange, a total of 400 will be contributed by the two punters and deposited before the match. The punter who makes the right prediction will get the Ksh 400, less commission to the person holding the cash.

Online Betting Exchanges

Instead of depositing cash with a friend, punters who wish to compete against fellow punters can find several online betting exchange sites, such as Betfair. On the online sites, a punter A backing Arsenal would decide to place say Ksh 200 that Arsenal would win. Another punter B who feels Manchester United would win can see punter A’s price of Ksh 200 and then matches punter A’s bet with say Ksh 200. In this case, if Arsenal wins, Punter A gets Ksh 400 as would Punter B if Manchester United wins.

What Are the Advantages of a Betting Exchange?

(a)     Better odds: Placing your bets on a betting exchange means you are not tied down to the odds set by a bookmaker. Instead of selecting bookmaker odds that have been carefully and painstakingly crunched by expert odds compilers to ensure the bookies have a profit margin, the exchange allows you to compete against a sports enthusiast who may not have spent much time on the teams and may therefore allow for a huge margin of error. A betting exchange is a free market approach that allows punters to get better prices, especially when a fellow punter undervalues a particular team. Most betting exchanges offer better odds than traditional bookmakers.

(b)     You can exploit the “laying option” to make more money: What if you believe that in a game between Arsenal and Manchester United, Manchester United won’t win? Holding such a firm opinion doesn’t mean you are sure Arsenal will win or that they will draw, but only that Manchester United won’t win. If you were to bet on such a prediction with a traditional bookmaker, you will have to use the double chance option which comes with very low odds. However, at a betting exchange, you can bet that Manchester United will not win and still get huge odds for it.

(c)     No fear that your account will be closed: While traditional bookmakers rarely close client accounts, some punters have had their accounts closed. Similarly, many traditional bookmakers have stake limits that punters can’t exceed. At a betting exchange, you are simply betting against your peers and no market interventions occur.

What are the disadvantages of a betting exchange?

(a)     Part of your winnings is lost in commission: Whenever you win money in a betting exchange, a certain portion (often 2%-5%) of the payout will be deducted as a commission. The commission is the pay you give to the exchange for acting as a middleman between you and other punters.

(b)     No odds for non-mainstream events: In the exchanges, only the bigger and more popular football matches tend to generate interest and have odds. Non-mainstream events and obscure sports will rarely have odds on the exchange.

Banker: What Is It? How Can You Use It for Betting Success?

If you have been researching a little bit before placing your bets, you have probably heard the term “banker” used frequently. So what is a banker? A banker is a red hot favorite that is expected to produce a win in a football match. For example, when an on-form Chelsea is playing Hull City at Stamford Bridge, they are expected to win easily. In this case Chelsea is a banker.

How a banker is used by punters

Banker teams usually have very short odds because of their high likelihood to win their matches. Because of this, they are often not used in single bets as they would return very little profit. However, when you are building a multiple bet, such as an accumulator, a banker team can be used as the foundation or cornerstone for the bet. In the multibet, the banker team acts as the security blanket, the sure stone upon which multiple bets can rely on. And since it is more likely to win than lose; it can multiply your profit when used in a multiple bet.

When creating a multibet using a banker, you will need to first pick a team that you have absolute confidence in. Let us say Chelsea is playing Hull City at home. If Chelsea is on form, then a match against Hull City at Stamford Bridge is easy and Chelsea is expected to win. Now, once you have picked Chelsea, you can select other teams you predict to win though the wins are not likely to be straightforward.

For example, you may pick Leicester at home against Watford, Manchester City at home against Southampton, Manchester United away at Sunderland, and West Brom at home against Middlesbrough.

So your bet slip will look like:

Chelsea win……………..1.30
Manchester City win……..1.75
Leicester win……………...2.00
Manchester United win……..1.65

But since you think Chelsea is a straight and easy win, you can use it as a banker to create doubles such as:

Chelsea win and Manchester city win: 1.3 x 1.75 x 100, which gives Ksh 227.50

Chelsea win and Leicester win: 1.30 x 2.00 x 100, which gives Ksh 260

Chelsea win and Manchester united win: 1.30 x 1.65 x 100, which gives Ksh 214.50

You may also use your banker to create a treble, a Trixie, Lucky 15, a Goliath and more bets.

Risk with the banker

A banker is a team you have utmost confidence in. Ordinarily, the team will win easily, even by a huge margin. But don’t get carried away and start picking and throwing in bankers here and there. In a game of football, any result is possible. The underdog may just surprise you and beat your banker team. If this happens, all your bets will go down and you will incur a huge loss. Because of this, you must research the banker team carefully, particularly its head-to-head results against the underdog. Don’t choose a team if it is playing a derby or a cup game because in such games the results may be quite unpredictable.

So a banker is a team you are confident will win and one you can use to boost your profit by combining with other teams. If the banker loses, your bet bombs even if all the other teams in the bet (s) win. But if as expected the banker wins, then you can smile all the way to the bank.

Asian Handicap: A Betting Guide for the Asian Handicap

There is increasing popularity of the Asian handicap betting on football matches, with many bettors finding it an interesting option for making good money. But what is the Asian Handicap and how does it work?

Essentially, the Asian Handicap is a way to narrow the possible outcomes on a match from the three (win, draw, loss) to just two (win or loss) by eliminating the draw. By opting for the Asian handicap, a punter forgoes the chance to bet on a draw and just restricts his/her options to a win or a loss.

Boosting your chances with a handicap

In the usual betting scenario, a punter has 3 options of win, draw or loss, meaning the chances of each outcome happening is around 33.5%. But for punters who want to increase their chances of winning bets, minimizing the options to just two outcomes, a win or a loss, is a great way to cut risk while boosting winning chances. This is achieved by exploring the better prices offered in the Asian Handicap betting market.

A handicap helps to level the playing field for the punter, helping punters to win money by picking favorite teams even when they lose or winning with the underdogs even when the underdogs lose. For instance, while there is usually very little fun making a straight bet on an underdog to pull off a big win, the handicap can allow you to bet on the underdog and win money even if the underdog loses.

You can apply the handicap on a variety of ways, but generally, you will give one team (often the weaker team) certain points or goals ahead of the match. The points or goals are typically picked by the bookmakers and punters simply select the head-start points or goals they wish to back.

(a)             Full Goal Asian Handicaps

When a team is handicapped in a football match, that team is given a negative goal value before the match begins.  Usually, it is the stronger team that is handicapped by assigning a negative goal value to it before the match begins. On the contrary, the weaker team is typically assigned a positive (plus) goal value to allow it to start the match even with the stronger team.

Let us take the example of Manchester United playing Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final. Manchester United is the stronger team in this tie so it can be handicapped to even things out for Celta Vigo. Since Manchester United is the stronger team and is expected to win the match before even a ball is kicked, it is given a deficit (minus value) with the Asian handicap.

There are two ways in which the handicap can be applied:

Scenario 1: Manchester United can be given a negative value such as -1.00 or -2.00 with odds say at 1.70 and 2.00 respectively. The odds mean that a bet on -1.00 for Manchester United implies the team is starting the game when already one-nil down. A punter making such a bet is predicting that Manchester United will overcome the -1.00 handicap and so will have to win the game by two or more goals. In case of the -2.00, the bettor is expecting Manchester United to overcome the handicap by scoring three or more goals. The bet is won when Manchester United overcomes the handicap, such as scoring 3-0, 4-1, 5-2 etc. But if Manchester United fails to overcome the handicap by getting a 1-0 or a 2-0 result (for the -2.00 handicap) the bet is lost as the handicap has not been overcome.

Scenario2: On the contrary, a bettor may opt to place a handicap on Celta Vigo, the weaker team. For example, a handicap on Celta Vigo would be +1.00 or +2.00 to mean that Celta Vigo is allowed to start the match when already 1-0 or 2-0 up respectively according to the Asian Handicap. The bettor wins the bet if Celta Vigo is able to hang on the result and keep some goal advantage. In case of a +1.00 handicap, losing 1-0 to Manchester United makes the result 1-1 in the Asian handicap, so a draw and the bet is lost. But if Celta Vigo manages a 0-0 draw, then the handicap result is 1-0 and the bettor wins the bet. In case of a +2.00 handicap, a Manchester United win of 1-0 means the result on the handicap stays 2-1, Celta Vigo wins (though loses actual match) and the punter wins the bet.

(b)            Level-Ball Asian Handicap

This is essentially a “draw no bet” option in which a zero is placed beside a team’s name when you make a bet. Any betting option with a zero (0), called a level-ball, beside a team means that a win for the team you back at 0 will be a win for your bet while a draw means your stake is refunded. If the team you backed at a "0" loses, you lose the bet. In the Level-Ball handicap, no team is started with a goal advantage and you simply expect a straight win for your pick.

(c)             Half and quarter goals handicap

This handicap does not mean a team will score a half or a quarter goal, but such half and quarter points are only used to cut a “tie” or a “push”.  For example, between 0 and -1.00, you can find -0.25, -0.50 and -0.75 intervals which are used to create a difference between two close bets. Betting a quarter goal means you are splitting your bet (though not in actual practice) by dividing half of your stake on one handicap below the quarter goal and the other half on the next handicap above the quarter goal.

Let’s make this clear by using the Manchester United and Celta Vigo example above. In the above case, a bet on -0.50 goals means betting your stake on the closest two handicaps either side of -0.50, which are -0.25 and -0.75. So if you have a stake of Ksh 100 placed on Celta Vigo for +0.75, the bet essentially puts Ksh 50 (half of your stake) on Celta Vigo +0.50 (half a goal) and Ksh 50 on Celta Vigo +1 (full goal). A +0.50 Asian Handicap on Celta Vigo means Celta have to win or draw for the punter to win the bet, because Celta already started the match with half a goal advantage. A +1.00 Asian Handicap also requires Celta Vigo to win or draw for the bet to succeed, but you may get a stake refund if Celta loses by 1 goal as such a score would make the Asian handicap a score tie. For a +0.75 handicap, falling between +0.50 and +1.00, you will win the bet with a win or a draw for Celta, but will lose half of your stake if Celta loses by 1 goal.

Multiple Bets: Meaning and Types

Bookmakers across the globe allow bett0rs to pick several selections and combine into one bet. A multiple bet is a bet made up of two or more selections. The selections can be from the same sport or different sports.
In fact, ff you have ever visited a website of a bookmaker and tried to pick on different teams, then the moment you returned to your betting slip you must have found those selections combined in one bet slip.

A multiple bet is quite a straightforward thing once you understand how it works. In fact, you are simply picking all the selections you fancy and putting them together to boost your income should all of them post your predicted result.

A multiple bet can either be a coverage bet or an accumulator. In a coverage bet, the punter tries to use the selections a couple of times in order to create a window of earning more money in case all the selections win or some money in case one of the selections fail to win.

For example, a patent bet is a type of multiple coverage bet in which a punter selects three teams and then uses them to create 3 singles, 3 doubles and one treble. A Trixie is a multiple coverage bet in which the punter picks three teams and uses them to create 3 doubles and one treble.

On the contrary, an accumulator is a multiple bet in which the punter simply picks a number of selections and places a bet without any combinations. For example, a double, a treble, a fourfold, a five-fold and a six-fold are all types of accumulators involving, two, three, four, five and six teams respectively.

Example of multiple bet

If on a weekend the following football teams are playing, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford, Tottenham Hotspurs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, you can decide to build a multiple bet by predicting different results for the teams and then combining your selections into one.

For example, we can say Chelsea to win, Manchester United to draw, Arsenal over 2.5, Watford to draw, Tottenham over 2.5, Barcelona win and Real Madrid win. Once we select our predictions, our betting slip will have all these teams together with respective predictions. If we put the bet in this form, we have placed a multiple bet.

When making multiple bets, we can create doubles, trebles and more. We just need to remember that when we are adding several selections into one betting slip, we are creating a multiple bet.

In a double, there are only two selections. For example, you can pick Barcelona to win and Chelsea to win and combine both in one betting slip, placing the bet with the same stake. A double earns more money on the same stake than two separate singles would do.

For instance, if a Chelsea win is 1.80 and a Barcelona win is 1.50, placing two separate singles will earn you Ksh 330 on a stake of Ksh 200 (100 per single bet). That is only a profit of Ksh 130. But if you placed a double bet, you will earn 1.80 x 1.50 x 200, which is Ksh 540, a profit of 340 on the same stake.

Risk involved in a multiple bet

A multiple bet comes with the exciting benefit that we are increasing out potential returns on a low stake. Nevertheless, there is also a huge risk in accumulator bets. The risk is that when one of the selections in the combined bet fails to get the predicted result, the bet is lost regardless how many of the selections have gone as predicted.

If you are a punter who likes using big stakes, then you may want to avoid the risk posed by multiple bets. However, if you are a punter who wants to make more on small stakes, then you may have to combine several selections into one bet. The more picks you throw into an accumulator, the higher the risk. On the contrary, the more picks you make, the higher the return.

For experienced punters then, an accumulator is used to combine some of the most thoroughly research teams with greater chances of posting favorable results. This yields massive return.

Common types of multiple bets

(a)     Double: A combination of two teams into a single bet.

(b)     Treble: A combination of three teams into a single bet.

(c)     Fourfold: A multibet of four selections.

(d)     Trixie: Three teams selected and used to create three doubles and one treble, giving four bets in total.

(e)     Lucky 15: A multibet consisting of 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, a 4-fold, making a total of 15 bets.

(f)      Lucky 31: Similar to lucky 15 but has 5 legs, resulting in a total of 31 bets.

(g)     Lucky 63: As above but with 6 legs, resulting in a total of 63 bets.

(h)     Yankee: Similar to a Trixie but made of 4 selections resulting in 11 separate bets requiring at least 2 separate selections to win for any return.

(i)      Canadian (Super Yankee): Consists of 5 legs resulting in 26 separate bets and requiring at least 2 selections to win so the bet can give some return.

(j)      Heinz: Made of 6 selections used to create 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 4-folds, 6 5-folds and 1 six-fold accumulator.

(k)     Super-Heinz: Has 7 selections used to create a total of 120 separate bets.

(l)      Goliath: Eight picks used to create a total of 247 bets.

Whether you build your multiple bet either as a coverage bet or as an accumulator, the bet will still have a higher risk and requires that you do your research thoroughly before placing the bet.

A multiple bet reduces your chance of winning because each extra selection can cause the bet to fail. Of course the flip side is that the more teams you add the greater the return, but you should at least do your research well to minimize the risk involved.

At Sportszu, we wish you good luck.
