7 Most Important things in Football Betting

If you want to succeed and make profit betting on football, here are 7 most important things you should know:

(1)     Know your teams thoroughly
Study your teams well. Make sure to know their strengths and weaknesses. Check their home and away records. Be objective and avoid emotional decisions. Also pay close attention to the changes going on in a team throughout the seasons, such as a coach being sacked or a key player is out for months.
(2)     Bet on highly motivated teams
Teams usually reserve their best performance to certain occasions or competitions. Make sure to gauge how important a competition is to a team before you bet. For example, a team that has already been relegated or has won the league may not be motivated to win the next match. Also, a team that has qualified for the play-offs in a cup competition may not be motivated to play well in the next qualification matches, but instead would be waiting for the play-offs. Bet on teams that are facing a must-win situation or those looking to avenge defeat.
(3)     Never chase losses
Sometimes you will lose so many bets in a row. This happens to all punters at some point. When you go through such a rough patch, never panic and begin to throw more money on bets in an attempt to recover lost money. Instead, take some time off or reduce your stake until you are back into a winning run. Both winning and losing streaks usually come to an end at some point so they should not push you to increase you stake significantly. Stick to your staking plan and follow your betting strategy.
(4)     Follow you head, not your heart
In football betting, you have a better chance of winning if you analyze teams thoroughly and select only those with the greater likelihood of winning. Honest assessment is what will bring big wins, not emotional attachments to certain teams. Don’t bet on a team because it is your favorite or because it has attractive odds. Also remember you can only predict correctly just a few games, so stick to a small number of teams instead of trying to predict the outcomes of an entire league fixture list every weekend.
(5)     Don’t follow public opinion
Football is quite unpredictable and whatever your friends and majority of pundits think may not come to pass. Don’t bet on a team because there is a strong public opinion in its favor. Instead, research and analyze all your teams, betting against public opinion when necessary.
(6)     Look for value
Try to find teams with low risk but high rewards. This in essence means looking for value. Value means that bookmaker odds are larger than the estimated chance of a team winning. For example, if Chelsea should objectively have odds of 1.50 but the bookmaker gives them 1.80, then there is value in betting for Chelsea.
(7)     Keep abreast with team news, injuries and suspensions
A team can only play as well as the players they are able to field on any given day. Therefore, make sure to check your teams for injuries, suspensions and lineups and to know the importance of absent players and their replacements to their teams. While some replacement players may be highly motivated to perform, beware of a possible performance dip if the absent player is the inspirational leader or best scorer of the team.
